Building Sale Forces 35 Denver-Area Businesses to Vacate Within 18 Days

LAKEWOOD, CO, Nov. 13, 2009 – The sale of a 30,000 square foot building at 9635 W.... Colfax Avenue in Lakewood will unexpectedly displace 35 independent businesses by the end of November. The move also disrupts a variety of already-scheduled community events and services.
Since February, 2009, the building has been tenanted by the Blue Sky Collective, an eclectic mix of artists, musicians, small business start-ups, instructors, wellness and service providers, and first-time entrepreneurs.

The collective is the vision of former social worker Jen Schafer-Habib, whose dream was to create an affordable place where independent businesses, co-ops, artists and musicians could come together to provide creative services, entertainment and education to the community, and support local culture and non-profits. Blue Sky Collective has been recognized by the Denver Westword as the “Best New Store on Colfax Avenue,” and was nominated for KMGH Denver’s 7 “A-List” of favorite local businesses.

On Thursday, November 12th, Schafer-Habib was notified by Colorado Community Bank that the property is changing ownership, and that she and her tenants would have 18 days to vacate the premises, or pay five times more per square foot than they are currently paying. On Friday the 13th of November, Schafer-Habib discovered that the locks had already been changed, and that building access would be limited from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, limiting classes, events, services, and the ability of tenants to move.

BUILDING SALE DISPLACES BUSINESSES (page 2)
In addition to her role the Blue Sky Collective facilitator, Schafer-Habib also runs a used bookstore on the property, and she must move approximately 100,000 books by the end of the month. “We don’t want to disrupt the sale of the building or the redevelopment of the property,” she said, “but we do need a fair amount of time to move, or this sale will shut down 35 businesses and a lot of community services. We are currently looking to partner with a property owner eager to re-tenant a location and support local arts, music, wellness and culture.”

One of approximately 50 stakeholders displaced by the building’s sale is Robin Beckwith, a 57 year-old silversmith and first-time entrepreneur. Beckwith is striving to rejoin the workforce and replace the Social Security Disability income she has lived on since 1999, following a traumatic brain injury.

“The Blue Sky Collective has given me a second chance to contribute,” Beckwith said. “It’s given me my self-respect. I don’t want to leave it, and I’m scared. If I had more time I could figure out something… but 18 days isn’t enough.”

Also affected is Todd Munson, first-time entrepreneur and proprietor of a thriving dance studio. Munson, whose wife is seven months pregnant, said, “I’ve invested thousands of dollars into creating a professional quality dance floor and studio in the building. To realize that I have 18 days to move an entire studio seems insensitive to me and everyone who patronizes the building as well.”

Blue Sky Collective hosts a used bookstore, live music, open mic poetry, roll playing games, a record/vinyl store, an art co-op, a healing co-op, three dance studios, two community rooms for movement classes and art workshops, a tea and candy shop, and a community acupuncture clinic. The collective also hosts concerts, author readings, benefits for non-profits and those in need, gaming tournaments, art exhibits, jam sessions, and drum circles.

So. . . that happened.

ello, fellow Tribelings!

So. . . I don't exactly know how it happened, but I'm moving to Western Colorado. . . and I know exactly 1 person. lol. So.. . who is out there? Grand Junction to I don't know. . . less than 2 hours from there. I'm a laid back. . . well. . . actually if you count a serious clean freak as laid back. . . so I guess I'm a semi laid back, open minded, extremely unjudgemental woman moving out there and I need some friends. Companions. Guides. People to help me explore the unknowns of Western Colorado, preferably people who won't comment on my flame red hair (I know I know, it's black in the picture. But its red now.) or my willingness to accept any religion or gender to love. :) I like almost all music. . .I'll be glad to dance to hiphop as much as get my hips moving to belly dancing, to attempting country line dancing. I really just like to get my ass on the dance floor and have a good time. I'm a heavy reader, and love having actual conversations about real things. I'm just wanting to find some kindred spirits.

I know this is a Denver tribe. . . but I thought maybe there might be a few Western Colorado people out there too. . . or I can at least make friends five hours away and spend a weekend or two occassionally making havoc in Denver. :P

We present An Evening at Lumonics the 2nd and 4th Sat. of each month. and it is like stepping into another world.

Lumonics is a multi-sensory environment comprised of magical light sculptures and fountains, intended to seduce you into a state of expanded awareness through the use of light, color, and sound.

Special Guest: DJ Pura Vida of Rhythm Sanctuary

Sienna will be playing Tibetan Bowls to take you on another journey of sound. The bowls create healing energy, and have been used for over 2000 years. Their harmonious vibrations have the ability to take us out of ourselves, and bring peace and harmony to the body, mind and spirit.

An integral part of the evening is the video art by Dorothy Tanner & Marc Billard. The videos consist of multi-layered colorful abstract imagery that lets your mind freely roam into inner space.

FREE FESTIVAL- Rythms On The Rio - August 22-23

I wanted to let you know about a free festival we are putting on in South Fork CO, on August 22nd and 23rd 2009.

The festival is called Rhythms On The Rio (www.rhythmsontherio.com).

It will be a free 2 day festival with on-site and local camping. It will be a pass the hat donation based benefit for the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust, and the High Valley Community Center for kids, and is being put on by The South Fork Music Association, a non-profit volunteer 501-3C Group.

Headling acts will include the Nershi-Law Trio (formerly Honkeytonk Homeslice) and friends, Drew Emmitt, Great American Taxi, and others. Appearing with Bill and Jill Nershi will be Scott Law, and Darol Anger (plus maybe some other unannounced guests). The Darol Anger Trio, and others, will also appear that
day. On August 23rd 2009, Great American Taxi, Susan Gibson, Pete Kartsounes, and others will also be appearing.

The festival will take place on the grassy banks of the Rio Grande river in the San Juan mountains of South Fork CO (just over Wolf Creek Pass from Pagossa Springs and west of Alamosa in the town of South Fork on highway 160), on August 22nd and 23rd 2009. It is easy to get to, and should be a kind, relaxed, real good time for everyone. Tickets are free, but must be downloaded off of the web site.

Apogaea Location announcement

Over thar. . . at Happy Ass Ranch in Park County, Colorado. We regret the
late confirmation of our site for this year's event, we've been diligently
evaluating a couple of alternative venues up 'til the eleventh hour. Options
are good, but we determined HAR is the most appropriate property for Apogaea
this year..

Some members of our community have expressed worries about this location. We
want to acknowledge we understand and have shared their concerns. We've met
in person with Park County public safety officials regarding our location.
Our proactive contact and subsequent dialogue around this years event have
been positive. Largely that's been thanks to you. . . as the artistic nature
of our event, the success of our leave-no-trace ethos, our attention to
detail on event organization, the professionalism of our public safety team
(thanks Rangers & EMS!), the extent of our volunteer participation. . .
these are all things that distinguish Apogaea in the eyes of permitting
officials. It's clearly understood that last year's law enforcement activity
was not associated with our event. Potential venues have good impressions of
our event and seem eager to work with us. We like it that way, so thank you
for doing all your positive voodoo you do do so well.

We'll continue to evaluate site options for Apogaea 2010 and beyond, so we
appreciate your suggestions for future locations. Please do not hesitate to
contact us with your ideas, questions or concerns.

Oh yeah. . . Apogaea's gonna freakin' rock your ramble downside up &
sideways in through the out door. Those of you who experienced Friday's
offworld mining colony, where the Expat Aliens set down their saucer on the
crust. . . you know what I'm talkin' 'bout. Already I feel advance tremors
of this Saturday's seismic rumble when a certain volcano goes active. I'm
aware of several Apogaea theme crews who've been busily cross-pollinating,
mutating, and getting ready to bring it on. And all the recent precipitation
looks good for holding off summer fire restrictions.

So see ya round the volcano, if not this Saturday then hopefully in June.

The movie was entirely shot in Denver. There's a special event with the filmmakers this Saturday 4/11 with the filmmakers and cast.

That movie just kicks ass. I saw it Saturday and will probably see it again. The little girl was adorable. The story was meaningful and the fight scenes were awesome.

The band I'm in, Bamboche is playing in Nederland CO at 1st Street Pub 10:00P-1:00AM on April 4th!
You take Canyon Blvd through Boulder West up the Mtn. to Nederland (when the speed limit says 25, don't go above it! It's a speed trap!) turn left right after the roundabout on 1st st.
Then, on April 11th at the Laughing Goat cafe 8:00P-11:00P It's between 17th and 18th Streets on the North side.

Come on out and support your local Rumba Drummers with some dancing and merriment!

Phoenix & the Sultry Emberz have brewed up a special evening for you which includes a spooktacular show, two live bands (Yallah! and Kara Nomadica), dancing, contests, mix of various styles of music for the late night dancers, and surprises.

Sometimes we need to look back to move forward. In 1968 there existed a spirit of change based around the Paris Rebellion, Prague, Chicago, Vietnam, and etc. People around the world believed that they were capable of taking over the institutions that controlled their lives. The smell of revolution was in the air. Over one million college students openly identified as revolutionist. People believed that through mass participation in the movement it was possible to wrest control from the elite power-holders. They were not willing to accept the loss of their human and civil rights.

Recreate 68 is not a throwback group trying to relieve some vision of glory days long gone. We are predominantly a youthful group that has realized that 40 years later, we have only produced apathy in our communities towards making effective and lasting change. We intend to recreate that need for change and mass participation in the events that shape and control our lives. We intend to recreate that revolutionary feeling, and pick up where our predecessors left off. It is time to reclaim the ideals that we have forgotten, and leap forward by stepping back. It is time to listen to that voice inside of us that has been telling us something is seriously wrong, the voice shouting for change, the voice whispering to us that we live in a police state, that we stopped moving forward 40 years ago.

When we recreate positives and discard negatives from our collective memories of the past, and realize the true power that the people possess, we will have the ability to make 2008 a very special year. This is the true meaning of Recreate 68. Don’t let this historic moment pass you by. We are hosting the "Taboot Music & Art Expo" in downtown Denver on June 7, 2008 from noon to 2am.

The event will be held at a new music venue, "Owsley's Golden Road" and will feature 20-25 10 ft spaces for artists to display their work for sale or just for show, food vendors, alcohol, four bands (including two nationally recognized), 2 dj's, performance artists, and more. We are expecting a crowd of 600-800.

The event will be advertised in the Westword beginning the second week of May, and all over town through hand silk screened posters and handbills beginning May 1st! The headliner is Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band.

My artwork is a random release of emotion, thought and skill. I bring to
you the viewer this: a collection of freestyle strokes and unique
patterning: techniques that I have developed over time by years of experimentation.

Each painting is unplanned. It begins and then when I am finished it ends.
The magic occurs when the imagery lives on vicariously through you the
viewer. One day, the painting can mean one thing and then the next day
it will mean something totally different. I leave the paintings
untitled, because they need to be left open for interpretation. All I wish
is for you to observe, breathe, believe, and just be, and see my
work as it is, because…. it is what it is.

In the future I see myself working towards bigger and brighter art
shows, working more with animation and …………decorating the walls of the
world through the immediate interpretation of the mind, body, and soul.

We are so excited to announce the grand opening of the new Taboot store in Denver, Colorado. Located at 3000 East Colfax, on the corner of East Colfax and Milwaukee, we are selling Taboot, Vintage, and NeoVolt clothing, as well as gems, minerals, crystal wraps, jewelry, purses, wallets, photography, and more. Our new spring collection will be available during our Grand Opening Party on Saturday, April 12th from 10am until midnight. We will have drinks, food, and music later in the evening. Metal trash cans and other "STOMP" like percussion needed for three

Me and my two hommies just got a gig in Telluride for a stomp influenced percussion session for a few days at the ski and snowboard festival. We have tons of percussion toys but never knew a metal trash can would cost so much. in which case we need your help. we just want to borrow, if interested, buy. None the less the event is the 13 & 14 of December. Any can, buckets or anything you feel is fun to hit with a drum stick in a rhythmic motion. Let us know, any help is needed. please be quick so we can have some time to rehearse.

"DEAD SOULS" Halloween party at Disintegration Sat Oct 27th!!!

Halloween is right around the corner and Disintegration is putting on a massive party!

Disintegration was one of two places in Denver chosen to promote the new Ian Curtis/Joy Division movie "CONTROL." The promotional party, complete with give-aways, trailer clips, and more happens to fall on the same weekend as Disintegration's massive Halloween celebration. So in memory of Ian Curtis, and many other musicians and artists that have influenced our generation, Disintegration is proud to present "Dead Souls" a Halloween/Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 27 at The Atrium (554 S. Broadway).

Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the costume contest. In order to be eligble for the contest, you do need to be dressed in the theme... either Dia De Los Muertos or a dead idol of yours. :)
Values of prize packages are over $300 for 1st, over $150 for 2nd and over $75 for 3rd. We will also be giving goody bags for the first 50 costumed patrons, and there will also be a raffle containing several BPAL items!!!

Wanting to sell their wares in a new store in Evergreen, Colorado. The store - called RavenGlass Gallery - will be opening at the beginning of October 2007. I'm looking for artists in all sorts of mediums - musicians and writers are welcome as well. The store will be run on a commission basis with a twist. YOU set the price on your work, we add a small markup to cover costs, and you get a monthly check. Hopefully, we'll be contacting you more often because your stuff is flying off the shelves! We cover the rent, the utilities, the set up, the selling, the taxes - all you have to do is provide your art and an inventory and price list.

Earthdance Colorado

On September 14th-16th, 2007, Onetribe welcomes everyone to join us in celebrating Earthdance.

The event will feature varied styles of electronic music by some of the best local DJs and performers. Come dance with us to the sounds of psytrance, house, progressive, breaks, techno, drum'n'bass, and downtempo. The music will be going from 8:30pm on Friday until around noon on Sunday morning, with the ceremonial Prayer for Peace taking place at 5pm on Saturday afternoon. The full lineup will be released shortly.

There will also be various workshops, held on Saturday, during the day. If you are interested in having a workshop, please contact sage_persephone at yahoo dot com.

This year's gathering will be held in the lush forested foothills of the Rockies, less than 1.5 hours from Denver. We'll be asking for a donation to help cover our costs, but no one will be turned away. I have been assigned the task to find an apartment for a friend and I'm wondering if any of you know of any good places to search online. I've already been browsing craigslist as well as forsalebyowner.com

Also, any suggestions on cool areas of Denver to live in would be welcome. I'm new to the area so I know nothing about the in's and out's of Denver. She's told me to look anywhere near downtown including Cherry Creek, Washinton Park, Lodo, Highlands, and near DU campus. Any other suggestions?

Full Moon Last weekend,Thanks

I went to a event last Saturday , it was a Full Moon party out side of Denver someware...
Well it was a great party ...even though we locked the keys in the car and had to pay to get it unlocked to go home.
I have to say that there was alot to be desired in the music area, alot of old techno stuff and in the morning some bad elevator music.But a good amount of people and talk about the crazy people,WOOOOOOOOOWWWW
I havent had that much nutball shit happen at an event since My 1st burn in 02, just to name a few things:

Cellphone guy....well you take the cake 1 of a kind performance art and fallow through on a long and okward joke.This preppy looking guy kept standing real close to groups of people and acting like he was talking on his phone( obviously no one had service ) say'in realy weird shit real loud and was either realy wasted on something or was great at acting like it,stumbling into tents ,on people and just beeing weird till it got real okward then would whip out the phone and mumble "call me" then stumble off to the next unsuspecting victims.

Crazy ass Thug guys...Scary to say the lest, cool and very friendly but totally nuts and wanted a chance to break into the jeepso we could get the keys sooooo bad it was hilarious.But we were in an 07 Rubicon and without breaking a window or tools impossible to get in so no dice.these guys ended up shooting a gun off in the morning a few times a lil ways away from the party and scared a bunch of kids off.They were all say'in sorry afterwards and dident meen to scare anyone but it was still weird to have happen in the morning after a party while the music was still going on.

I have no Idea who put it on but I would like to say thanx from me and my group,the spot was amazing,the moon was so brite it was like dusk all night. great sun rise ,my 1st time watching the sun go down in a blaze behind the Colorado mountain's.Very nice!
